This is the best review of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel that I have ever come across, and what is discussed in this 2015 video will also apply to the 2016 models.
Alex On Autos is very thorough in his review both in describing the Jeeps features, and its road performance.
With a towing capacity of 7400lbs with the 4WD model, which is pretty good for a medium size SUV weighing in at 5000 plus pounds. Believe me there is nothing worse that towing something that is too heavy for the tow vehicle. I have witnessed some scary antics on the road when the trailer has decided it will take command of the tow vehicle.
With its grunty high torque V6 diesel coupled to an 8 speed transmission this makes it a pleasure to drive, and maintain a good average road speed when heavy towing.
Heavy towing is where a diesel will win every time over gasoline, and to get the best out of a diesel you do need to clock up mileage.
Every diesel engine has a power band and its necessary to keep the engine revs with in this.
I once hired a 10 seater bus and drove this several hundred miles non stop. It had a mis-matched 5 speed manual which meant when changing up a gear in 3rd to 4th to 5th it was necessary to rev the engine past its safe high RPM to avoid getting into the next gear below the RPM that was the start of the power band, and also losing turbo boost.
When changing down a gear going up a hill was worse as had to let the revs drop well down and almost totally lose the turbo to avoid over revving in the next lower gear.
We did have 6 days good fishing however, but then I had to drive this heap of crap back again. No wonder I couldn’t tempt someone else to do this.
At the end of the video Alex compares the Grand Cherokee to other medium size SUV’s, like Mercedes, BMW, Lexus etc. Very interesting and shows what good value for money the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel is.
